What Can Companies be Doing to Promote Self-Care in the Workplace?
Posted on 24 Feb, 2022
If the last two years of living with a global pandemic have taught us nothing else, they have demonstrated the importance of self-care, both at home and in the workplace. While working from home both during and after lockdown, many of us took the time to look after our mental health and well-being, as well as performing our work duties in trying circumstances.
Now that many of us are back in the office, self-care has become no less important. In this article we take a look at some simple ways companies can promote self-care among their staff.
Turn self-care into a habit
Encourage your team to make time for their own self-care every day. If they need to take a couple of minutes for themselves – whether it’s to make a cup of tea, go for a brief stroll or simply to collect their thoughts, you should allow them to do so. Don’t expect your staff to ask for permission. Make it part of their day-to-day routine.
Recognise effort and achievement
When your team is working well, it’s easy to forget how much effort they are putting in each day. Take time out to thank them for the work they do and acknowledge their efforts. Being told you’re doing a good job raises the spirits of your staff… and yours too.
Keep your team hydrated
Encourage your team to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Dehydration leads to a range of negative sides effects, from dizziness and hunger pangs, to being unable to focus on simple activities. Invest in a water cooler that is easily accessible to all your staff or provide bottles of soft drinks in the staff fridge.
Take breaks
Many office employees work through their designated breaks, because they are committed to finishing off a particular task. Whilst this dedication is to be applauded, encourage your team to take their breaks for their own self-care. Where possible, try to convince them to spend their breaks away from their desk and if possible, to get some fresh air. Any work will still be there for them when they get back.
